ELT M5 Mirror Reaches New Milestones: CTEC Piezo Actuators Continue to Support Field Stabilization

Since our previous communication in 2024 regarding CTEC’s contribution to the European Southern Observatory’s (ESO) Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), several important milestones have been achieved in the development of the telescope’s M5 mirror system.

The M5 mirror plays a critical role in the ELT architecture. Acting as a fast tip-tilt mirror, it continuously compensates for atmospheric disturbances and telescope vibrations, ensuring exceptional image stability for scientific observations.

Significant Progress on the M5 System

The M5 mirror cell, developed by Sener and integrating CTEC’s high-performance piezoelectric actuator technology, has successfully completed manufacturing, testing, and delivery to ESO.

According to project partners, the M5 stabilization system relies on three high-precision piezoelectric actuators capable of delivering nanoradian-level corrections at frequencies up to 10 Hz. This demanding performance is essential to maintain the ELT’s unprecedented optical stability.

In parallel, the M5 mirror substrate was completed in 2024, and optical polishing and qualification activities are currently underway at Safran Reosc. These developments represent a major step toward the final integration of the ELT.

CTEC Technology at the Heart of ELT Stabilization

CTEC’s custom APA500XXL piezoelectric actuators were specifically designed to meet the stringent requirements of the ELT M5 Field Stabilization Unit. The actuators combine high force, large displacement capability, outstanding reliability, and long-term stability, making them ideally suited for one of the world’s most ambitious astronomical projects.

The successful completion of the M5 mirror cell confirms the maturity of the technology and highlights the contribution of CTEC’s piezoelectric solutions to the next generation of ground-based astronomical instrumentation.
