Electro-fluidic components based on smart materials for aircraft electro-hydraulic

19 June 2023

In the context of a more electrical aircraft, in order to explore the feasibility of non usual solutions, electro-fluidic components based on smart materials and new Electro-Hydraulic-Actuators (EHA) concepts, based on active valves and magnetostrictive vibrating pump, have been studied. Active valves based on different magnetostrictive and piezoelectric actuators have been designed, realised, tested and compared. The magnetostrictive version uses a new Amplified Magnetostrictive Actuator (AMA) based on a stack of Giant Magnetostrictive Materials (GMM) and placed inside an elliptical amplification ring.

Vibration isolation of an extended object

19 June 2023

An increasing number of applications required a very high level of precesion: semiconductor manufacturing, atomic force microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, machine tool, etc. Such high precision can only be reached in very stable environments. the standard procedure is to mount the sensitive equipment on a heavy isolating stage, sometimes referred to as optical table, which can be either passive or active.

Viscoelastic properties of the ferret brain measured in vivo at multiple frequencies by magnetic resonance elastography

19 June 2023

Characterization of the dynamic mechanical behavior of brain tissue is essential for understanding and simulating the mechanisms of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Changes in mechanical properties may also reflect changes in the brain due to aging or disease. In this study, we used magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) to measure the viscoelastic properties of ferret brain tissue in vivo.

Encapsulated Piezo Actuators for use at high power levels and/or within harsh environmental conditions

9 January 2016

Traditionally piezo ceramic actuators have not been able to operate within harsh/humid environments. Furthermore, two temperature-related problems have limited the number of applications for piezo actuators. Firstly, internal heating of the ceramic from use at high frequency, for extended periods. Secondly, external environmental conditions. Encapsulation of the actuator offers an opportunity to overcome all of these problems by allowing the environment directly in contact with the ceramic to be controlled. This paper presents R&D work done on encapsulated actuators, design work, and thermal simulation calculations with an emphasis on experimental results.

Wind-tunnel tests of a helicopter rotor with active flaps

19 June 2023

Within the frame of a project called DTP RPA (DĂ©veloppement Technique Probatoire Rotor Ă  Pale Active), also known as Active Blade Concept, carried out in cooperation between ONERA, Eurocopter, DLR and Eurocopter Deutschland, a four-bladed Mach-scaled rotor was tested in December 2005 in ONERA S1 Modane wind-tunnel. The main objective of this test was to validate the concept of using active flaps located on the trailing edge of the blades of the main rotor of a helicopter to decrease the vibration level generated by this rotor.

XY200M a new design of piezo stage

9 January 2002

The XY200M is an XY piezo stage coming from CEDRAT TECHNOLOGIES lab and which was newly designed according to space needs defined with CNES (the French space agency). This XY stage benefi ts from the heritage of a former XY stage developed for ESA (European Space Agency) in the frame of Rosetta / Midas space mission which will launch in the beginning of 2003. It is based on two pairs of APA200M, Amplifi ed Piezo Actuators displaying 200 ”m of stroke each, arranged in cross configuration around a central ring.
