ACTUATOR2008 Stepping piezoelectric actuators Abstract

19 June 2023

Stepping Piezoelectric Actuators (SPA) are new long-stroke linear piezoelectric motors for micro/nano positioning applications benefiting of the advantages and the heritage of the APA. SPA are formed of only 4 parts: the well-established Amplified Piezoelectric Actuators (APA), a front mass, a clamp and a rod.

Large stroke Rotary Voice Coil Motor for cryogenic application

19 June 2023

CTEC is developing and testing Rotary Voice Coil Motors (RVCM) for new cryogenic space scan mechanisms applications, based on former MTG space program heritage. The RVCM is an electromagnetic motor based on Laplace force. The motor is composed of coils at the rotor part (mobile) and magnets at the stator part (fixed). The Laplace motor generates a pure torque, without cogging or parasitic force drawback, which makes it specifically relevant for scan mechanisms.

ACTUATOR2008 Stepping piezoelectric actuators based on APA®

1 January 2008

Abstract: Stepping Piezoelectric Actuators (SPA) are new small long-stroke linear piezoelectric motors for micro/nano positioning applications benefiting of the advantages and the heritage of the APA. SPA is formed of only 4 parts: the well-established Amplified Piezoelectric Actuators (APA), a front mass, a clamp and a rod. SPA operates by accumulation of small steps, using inertial mode, impact forces and stick-slip effects, allowing performing long strokes (> 10mm). Main advantages induced by the choice of the APA above a usual inertial drive mechanism (IDM) are high reliability, low peak current ( 20mm/s), useful forces (from 1N for XS to 30N for SM type) and nano positioning mode.

Actuators for Space Applications: State of the Art and New Technologies

19 June 2023

Actuators in space are broadly used to operate satellites’ platform and payload devices. Despite their common utilisation, actuators still represent critical subsystems as their failure might often lead to severe, when not catastrophic, effects on the spacecraft operations. Environmental conditions to which actuators are exposed in space are generally not favourable: operating temperature ranges and deep vacuum are certainly the most critical ones.

ABC Rotor blades: design, manufacturing and testing

19 June 2023

ABC is the acronym for ‘’Active Blade Concept’’ and represents a 38% Mach scaled model rotor of the Advanced Technology Rotor (ATR) of Eurocopter Germany (ECD, [4]). In contrast to the ATR the model rotor is fully articulated. Specifically, it is equipped with a flap at the trailing edge of each blade, which is driven by a piezoelectric actuator. The ABC project is a cooperation between the French ONERA and the German DLR within the research concept ‘’The Active Rotor’’.

Limited Angle Torque for fine angular positioning

19 June 2023

A Limited Angle Torque (LAT) actuator has been designed by Cedrat upon request of the European Space Agency (ESA) for fine pointing applications based on gimbals assembly. The required angular stroke for this application is 13°. Other required features are controllability, high resolution, no micro vibration. Therefore the selected concept is a coil-redounded electromagnetic actuator using Lorentz force. The functional test shows that the generated torque is linear until 200mN.m, but torques up to 300mN.m are achievable.
